Our story
In 2025, the association, formerly the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC), expanded its mandate and is now the leading voice for the securities and investment management industry. SIMA’s history is one of innovation and impact. Established in 1962, we have continually expanded our mandate to reflect the evolution of Canada’s investment industry.
The 60s and 70s
In 1967, the Canadian Mutual Funds Association was rebranded as The Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC). That same year, the Canadian Investment Funds Course for Mutual Fund Licensing was launched, equipping industry professionals with the knowledge and credentials to serve Canadian investors to the highest standard.
The 90s and early 2000s
Through the 1990s, IFIC deepened its role as the authoritative voice for Canada’s mutual fund industry as the sector grew rapidly in scale and complexity. The association expanded its advocacy efforts, strengthening engagement with regulators and policymakers to ensure the investment funds framework kept pace with a changing market.
IFIC became the definitive source of industry statistics and research, publishing data relied upon by members, government, and media.
The 2017–18 era and the lead-up to 2025
The evolution from IFIC to SIMA represents a sustained commitment to advocating for financial policies that protect investors, foster innovation, and fuel economic growth.
As Canada’s investment industry evolves, SIMA remains steadfast in its mission to equip members with the intelligence, advocacy, and collaboration they need to navigate a rapidly changing landscape.
